He can't take the pirate down on his own.
It's the first thought that enters Joe's mind moments after their swords first clash. You take the measure of your opponent as quickly as you can in order to survive, and Joe knows that this time he is overmatched.
It hurts to admit it, even to himself, but there are more important things to worry about right now. Like the glory of the Zangyack Empire.
To catch such a pesky pirate as the self-proclaimed Captain Marvelous would remove a huge thorn from their side. For just one person he has managed to do a lot of damage to their ongoing mission of conquest.
Joe throws up his arm beneath the blade of his sword to brace against the force of Marvelous' cutlass. He feels his feet slipping.
He ducks down under, and away. When he spins around Marvelous is already there to meet him again. He sees Marvelous' hand twitch over the pistol in his belt, and charges. Even if he is overmatched he cannot afford to hesitate. Even if all he can do is distract the pirate until reinforcements arrive.
After all, the Gormins surrounding them are nothing more than a heap of tangled bodies, defeated already. Joe hopes the reinforcements are something a little better. Gormins are good for simple tasks, but they have no imagination and very little real strength.
"Joe!" A voice calls, and Joe glances past Marvelous to see Sid running towards them. He knows his face says it all; Sid can read the flicker in his eyes beyond the determined set of his face. Sid is a better swordsman than Joe, he taught Joe to fight. If he takes on Marvelous their chances are much better.
Marvelous' head jerks a little at the sound, but he refuses to turn and see what is headed his way. He takes in Joe's name, Joe can see that much. Information is feeding into his mind a mile a minute as they fight.
Sid refuses to take an opponent down from behind. Marvelous can't possibly know this - most likely he was waiting until the last moment to turn and strike, but Sid stops short, pointing his sword directly at Marvelous' back.
"Give up, and come quietly."
Joe freezes opposite him, but Marvelous does not stand down. Instead he grins. His foot slides, his hand grabs, and Joe finds himself crumpling to the ground, sword clattering down beside him.
"I don't give up," Marvelous says, turning around. Joe knows he is forgotten now. It's over for him; Marvelous knows he is defeatable. "And I definitely don't do things quietly."
"Fine," Sid says with a half-sigh, "have it your way."
He moves into position, feed wider apart and knees slightly bent. His sword circles in the air, sucking the momentum with it. Marvelous, light on his feet, is about to jump out of the way, Joe knows. So he reaches out to wrap his arms around Marvelous' leg and holds him in place until the blow hits and Captain Marvelous tumbles to the ground with a hard thud.
He doesn't appear to be bleeding; a couple of minor cuts, bruises will be developing. Joe is dusting himself off when Sid walks over.
"That was a little unfair of you," he says, but he's smiling. The truth is it worked, after all.
"He's a pirate," Joe says as he gets up, tries not to spit it too hard. There's no shame in going down so long as your opponent is the one defeated in the end. "He wasn't going to fight fair, so why should we?"
